Maintaining a calm edge!

Blog 7#

Dashing across a T-junction to the Cuban cafe to get my morning espresso, when out of the blue a runner shot by almost knocking me over. ‘Blast that was too close for comfort.’ If you have ever been in a similar situation have you noticed how that split second seems to make your heart stop beating temporarily?

It is a bit like the moment an exam is about to begin. The head professor or teacher might nod and say, "the exam," to alert the students, and then, "begins now!" And at that exact moment it is as though the world is about to cave in around me.

That instant I dreaded the most because I was not properly prepared. During classes I would sit at the back and spend less than 30% of my attention focused on the subject, I would not have handed in any homework either, and I would be playing my imaginary guitar while trying to remember lyrics to songs from Deep Purple, Queen, or Black Sabbath; twanging away each string one by one. Classes felt like my chance to be Mark Wahlberg in Rock Star!

To me I needed to develop a sense of identity that has nothing to do with grades, awards or designer clothes. I do not know if you feel the same way or used to have a similar connection, but for some it is a burden, or in other words it is dealing with stress. At the time I would not consider an alternative method for conducting myself at school; that is until I grew up some years later - finally coming to my senses that I needed to get smarter and work better.

So is it a question of growing up, or is it a question of helping students have a better understanding of the purpose of education? Perhaps it is impossible to pinpoint the route cause to every occurrence, but do you not think we should take it one step beyond settling to clarify doubt and help students get their act together?

Students Ratings recommends that you share your own experiences; sharing the light to things it could help you or other students improve their performance!
